Weekly Update #35

25 – 29 August 2025

Tariff Update

On 21 August, the US and EU released the New Trade Framework Statement.  Unfortunately, it does not carry any relief for wines and spirits and tariffs will remain at 15%.  There are encouraging reports however, that Wine and Spirits remain a negotiable item with the framework, with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic quoted as saying “This one we didn’t get in. But I can tell you that there is clear commitment from the European Commission to put it on the table,”  The US Wine Trade Alliance also released a statement echoing these comments saying  “Our message is simple: lowering tariffs on wine strengthens American businesses, supports jobs, and benefits consumers, all without harming U.S. producers”

Closures at Argentina-Chile Border due to Snowfall

It’s often odd to think about snow when most parts of the US are slogging it out during a sweltering summer.  The wild winter weather again closed the Argentina – Chile border last Thursday, expected delays to shipments as operations return to normal after transport backlogs are cleared.
