California’s Transition to Carbon Neutrality by 2045
In October 2023, the California Governor signed Assembly Bill 1305, the Voluntary Carbon Market Disclosures Act (VCMDA), to advance the state’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2045. The law requires businesses to disclose carbon neutrality claims, carbon offsets, and sustainable practices. Sitting alongside the VCMDA is the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Advanced Clean Fleets rule, mandating zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty trucks by 2045. For wineries and importers reliant on trucking to move wine from warehouses and vineyards to distribution centers and accounts, this requirement means a move away from diesel-powered trucks to electric or hydrogen-powered alternatives. Over the next few years, infrastructure like charging stations or hydrogen fueling hubs, as well as initial investments in zero-emission vehicles, will need to develop quickly.
The Port of Oakland was recently awarded $322 million to fast-track the Oakland Seaport’s conversion to nearly 100 percent zero-emissions cargo handling operations. Find out more about the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant here.
