Strike Update
This week we have fielded several questions about the Strike. We have cataloged all the questions received from our customers and have put together this handy Q & A regarding the impact of the strike on Elenteny containers.
How long will the Strike last?
We do not know, but some sources estimate that it will be less than a week. However, the ILA’s decision to walk away from the latest offer does not seem like a positive sign.
What happens to orders that have departed but are arriving next week?
Steamship lines have directed their vessels to drop anchor and wait out the Strike.
What’s the timing for orders that were due to arrive this week?
The Strike went into effect on October 1st at Midnight. Each day of the strike will potentially add a week to your inbound time. For example, If you have a vessel arriving at Anchorage on October 5, it could take up to five weeks for your container to be discharged. If the strike ends sooner, you may only have a couple of weeks of backlog.
What happens with orders in containers but have not loaded yet?
We are seeking additional information from the steamship lines regarding potential strike surcharges. Some surcharges we have seen are effective October 1, while other lanes show these charges to take effect later this month – more on estimates below. Elenteny’s goal is to be transparent about potential charges so you can make informed decisions.
Are you still picking up orders?
Yes, if you need your goods by the end of the year we recommend that you maintain your bookings as this means that you will stay in the queue to get your goods processed once the strike ends.
If you maintain your booking you may incur Strike Surcharges.
What are the Strike Surcharges?
We have not been provided with a rate sheet from the Steamship lines at this time. We continue to ask for this information, and as soon as we have this we will provide it to our customers. While no official announcement has been made, there are indications that it could be as much as $2.50 per case.
Are you still booking containers?
Yes, we will continue booking containers as long as SteamShip Lines allow and unless you direct us to hold your order.
Are vessels still departing the country of origin?
Yes, vessels are still departing on time. This could change as more traffic builds in anchorage points near the East Coast ports.
Can you redirect my NY bound to Oakland instead?
We would need you to tell us immediately if you want this to occur. We need 72 hours before the loading date to change the destination of orders already submitted.
Can I move my order currently at anchor to a different Port ?
No, orders at anchor will stay on the boats and they will not be directed to other Ports.
Can you redirect containers to Ports on the East Coast that are open?
We have been advised not to book into these Ports as they are already managing significant backlogs. The redistribution of these goods during a strike will create ongoing backlogs at these Ports.
Can we use air freight instead?
Yes, we will quote airfreight. To provide an accurate quote we need LxWxH Dimensions of Pallet(s) and weight, in addition to the pickup/delivery address. Please reach out to sales@elentenyimports.com for a quote.
Does Elenteny have any influence over what is inbounded first as the strike lifts?
The current queue will hold. We don’t anticipate there will be a way for your goods to be pulled sooner than their current order. There will be no RUSH inbounds.
