Weekly Update #18

5 May – 9 May 2025

Equipment Challenges & Tariff Deadline

As predicted at the beginning of the 90-day tariff pause, we’re now experiencing the consequences of accumulated orders at origin ports, creating pressure on reefer container availability during our peak demand period.

While we’ve successfully secured necessary equipment and bookings so far, we’re receiving alerts from our French partners that upcoming shipments may face delays due to several factors, including:

  • May holiday port congestion
  • Potential port omissions by carriers
  • Limited vessel space availability

Based on current conditions, new orders placed today will likely experience delays and may arrive in the U.S. after the possible higher reciprocal tariff rate takes effect.  Currently, other European ports aren’t reporting similar issues, but we anticipate this situation will spread as we approach the next tariff deadline.

2025 Barolo & Barbaresco Vintage Releases

The recent Grandi Langhe 2025 event in Turin showcased the latest releases from Piedmont’s renowned wine regions. The 2021 Barolo vintage has received widespread acclaim for its exceptional quality, featuring wines with remarkable fruit purity, floral aromatics, and well-structured tannins suitable for long-term aging.

The 2022 Barbaresco releases present a different profile, offering immediate drinkability with vibrant fruit characteristics and good acidity. These wines will be enjoyable in the near term while the more structured 2021 Barolos mature.

Industry data shows Barolo experienced a 6% increase in bottled volume in 2024, with particular interest in the 2021 vintage. Notable producers from this release include Burlotto, Vietti, Paolo Scavino, and Elvio Cogno.

For those interested in Riserva wines, the 2019 vintage has produced excellent examples, with standouts like Oddero’s Vignarionda demonstrating exceptional quality. These wines represent the continued tradition of fine winemaking in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Read more from the Real Review here
